In the nearby monasteries, harmonious chanting fills the atmosphere with a very positive and soothing vibe and the constant jingling of the huge prayer mills and humming engines of the Royal Enfields seem lull the traveler into a relaxed mood!  Amidst the snow-capped peaks, the landscapes are breathtaking. The air is as crisp as the water is clear; the nights so starry you can see without the help of a lamp. The Royal Enfields move forward with ease and take the many mountain passes in their stride, including the famous Kardung-La, at 5 603 m. Deep turquoise lakes are scattered across the lunar landscape of the Himalayan deserts, the Chang-Tang. Like a ribbon, our road seems to swirl around the plateau at a height of 4 000 m. This unique adventure will take you to some of the highest mountain passes on Earth and is guaranteed to make you feel a range of emotions like never before!

ALTITUDE
The difficulty of this trip lies in the altitude where oxygen is scarce. It is important that you get your General Practitioner to confirm that there are no apparent medical objections to you taking part in this adventure.  Furthermore, a specialized doctor will give you the information you need to take into consideration, after running some tests.

Day 1 / Arrival in Manali

In order to avoir a 15 hour bus ride from New Dehli, our trip starts in Manali.

Day 2 / Manali (alt. 2 000 m)

A day to get used to the altitude and get familiar with your Royal Enfield by making a short loop around Manali.

Day 3 / Stage 1 - Manali - Jispa (alt. 3 400 m): 140 km

Take a deep breath and take off! From the very start, the road soars towards the clouds and reaches the Rotang-pass at 3 955 m. The slope is pretty steep but the curves seem to follow each other harmoniously. The bikes continue to purr. At the pass, the views and impressions are simply breath-taking, after a 2 000 m climb.

Day 4 / Stage 2 - Jispa - Tso-Khar (alt. 4 600 m): 170 km

The road is dangerous and unforeseen events are always a possibility. Staying focused at all times is of vital importance! But the surrounding views are astounding! Sarchou marks the border between the Pradesh Himachal and the Jammu Cachemire (which includes both the Cachemire and Ladakh regions). Here again, you will have to show your passports! After a rickety ride on a weather beaten road, the bikes are put to test by the altitude as you reach the Nakela pass (4 500 m) and the Lachalung-La peak (5 065 m). Today’s ride ends at the shores of lake Tso-Khar, a quiet and remote spot on the deserted plateau of Chang tang.

Day 5 / Stage 3 - Tso-Khar - Leh (alt. 3 524 m): 150 km

The itinerary continues across the dry and almost lunar Chang tang. This is the realm of the yak. The road continues its climb, winding relentlessly towards the sky, as if aiming towards the summit of the Tanglang-la peak, at 5 328 m. The road leads to Leh, capital of the Ladakh region.

Day 6 / Stage 4 - Leh - Alchi (alt. 3100 m ) - Leh: 120 km

Today’s ride takes the road to Kashmir and allows the traveler to observe from a privileged height the stunning river Indus. The pavement here is in perfect conditions enabling the rider to relax slightly before continuing towards the Alchi monastery which seems to emerge suddenly just behind a canyon. A visit to this monastery is almost compulsory. Among other interests, it houses the oldest Buddhist mural paintings in Ladakh!
Ride back to Leh in the afternoon, to visit the local bazars.

Day 7 / Stage 5 - Leh - Vallée de la Nubra (alt. 3000 m ): 110 km

Off you go, to tackle the famous climb of the Kardong-la peak (5 603 m). Your Royal Enfield continues its relentless climb as it takes each one of the bends that make up this colossal helix! However, as we all know, “what goes up must come down” and soon you will start your descent towards the Nubra Valley. This is the northernmost point of India. It is nicknamed the “forbidden valley” since its access was forbidden by the army until 1995.

Day 8 / Stage 6 - Vallée de la Nubra - Panggong-Tso Lake (alt. 4298 m): 210 km

The surrounding panoramic views are astounding. The immensity of the Himalayan mountain range serves the purpose of putting one’s life in perspective! Lake Panggong tso (4 298 m) is the largest salted lake in Asia. At its narrowest it is 2 km wide, and 10 km at its widest and it is 130 km long. It marks the border between Ladahk and Tibet. In fact, most of the lake lies in Chinese territory and is therefore out of reach for travelers. Its turquoise blue waters are a remnant of the sea of Thetys that once covered the whole of the Tibetan plateau before the Indian tectonic plate applied its pressure to these lands giving birth to the Himalayan mountain range.

Day 9 / Stage 7 - Panggong-Tso Lake - Leh (alt. 3 524 m): 140 km

Our itinerary today takes us back to Leh. The river snakes through the valley attracting many a creature of the local fauna: geese, black headed cranes, groundhogs, and enormous yaks, of course! Crossing of the Chang La pass at 5 200 m. Visit of the Thiksey monastery, renowned for its resemblance with the Potala palace in Lhassa, Tibet.

Day 10 / Stage 8 - Leh – Tso-Moriri Lake (alt. 4 500 m): 230 km

This stretch is pretty long and the road quite rickety. However, the views are so stunning you won’t regret it! When the landscape in Ladakh imitates that of Mongolia, the traveler cannot help but feel the immensity. Our track seems to wind its way towards the horizon on a never ending journey. Our bikes hum along the track and through the grand void. There is no one about, no vehicles to be seen! And as you take yet another curve, a lake of the bluest darkest water appears ahead of you: Lake Tsomoriri, surrounded by a crown of Himalayan peaks. The feeling of space and solitude is overwhelming!

Day 11 / Stage 9 - Tso-Moriri Lake - Sarchou ( alt 4200 m): 200 km

As you drive along the same road you took before, you will be astonished to observe that the landscape somehow seems different. The paved road plunges towards Sarchou and through a narrow canyon. Your brakes might overheat as you whiz down enjoying the declivity.

Day 12 / Stage 10 - Sarchou - Manali (alt. 2 000 m): 230 km

These last kilometers will be covered rapidly especially given the fact that the weather can get quite temperamental at the Barlacha-La pass (4 682 m). After the last pass, the famous Rothang pass, and as you start your drive down towards Manali, green vegetation makes its appearance again. Though you might be reluctant to do so, it is now time to give back the old-fashioned but very reliable Royal Enfields!

  • Our itinerary often unfolds at very high altitudes (around 4 000 m) and the roads taken are not always smooth given the harsh weather conditions they have to endure. However, the difficulty is to be found mainly in the extreme altitude and unreliable weather. Once again, you will be embarking on a true adventure! Don’t let yourself think otherwise! More than ever and as with any motorbike trip, a good physical of all the participants is required. Also bear in mind it is vital to stay focused at all times especially given what we can only call “exotic” driving habits.  Biking experience is highly recommended!
    TWO UP? It is perfectly feasible provided that both rider and passenger are fit and have the adequate experience. This trip has been set up with this possibility in mind.
     
Guide and luggage
  • You will be accompanied by a Trail Rando team member, riding his own bike. A chase vehicle will also follow the group with the luggage, a basic first aid kit, tools, some spare parts and is always able to lend a hand if required. In case of motorbike breakdown or pilot fatigue, the bike or driver can be picked up by the chase vehicle, too.
