This trip offers an unrivaled variety of landscapes! You probably think you already know Morocco and yet this country still has many secrets to be revealed to the traveler who is willing to step off the beaten tracks!
The itinerary takes the visitor through a forest of century-old cedar trees in the Middle Atlas mountains, it crisscrosses high-altitude plateaus riddled with volcanic lakes, it tickles the snow-covered summits in the High Atlas range, crosses through the Anti-Atlas, weaves its way across the steppes before gliding under the refreshing shade of the most unexpected palm tree groves.
This is Morocco at its very best! A true festival of colors and emotions…
To the North, the rolling mountainous region of the Riff, peaking at 2 548 m. The Mediterranean Sea nibbles away at the massif which plunges abruptly into its waves. But the altitude begins to drop as we drive down sunny slopes and hills enjoying the view of olive and fig trees all the way to Fez, the cultural capital.
Further south, the space is occupied by the Middle Atlas (3190 m) with its harsh climate, where ancient cedars adorn the abrupt slopes and high plateaus. The Middle Atlas leans against its grandfather, the mighty Grand Atlas (4167 m), where the sharpest peaks cut the country in half.
The valleys in the south open onto the desert and the Saharan regions, where the Anti-Atlas stands with its volcanic landscape and the eroded relief and basalt rocks are silent witnesses of its phenomenal age...

Your day by day program

1
Day 1 / Stage 1 - Melilla - Guercif: 160 km

A network of playful flowery roads covers the area above the Mohamed V dam. A track then continues through a lovely area. Curve after curve, the landscape keeps taking the visitor's breath away.
Overnight stay in a hotel.

2
Day 2 / Stage 2 - Guercif - Midelt: 400 km

Throughout this first stage, the itinerary cuts across the Rekkam plateau taking, now and then, some straight stretches of the mythical Paris-Dakar race. Soon, you will reach Missour. From this point on, the decor changes and you will find yourself in the midst of rocky surroundings interspersed with deep gorges. The landscape is stunning but the driving is also fun thanks to a series of compelling curves!
Overnight stay in a hotel.

3
Day 3 / Stage 3 - Midelt - Erfoud: 300 km

From the very start, the itinerary takes the traveler along a beautiful stretch of road enclosed by massive rock walls. Then, the mountains give way to the desert and you will see afar the luxuriant palm grove of Goulmima. In this oasis of calm and freshness, Said offers the tired traveler a delectable lunch. Other palm groves appear throughout the next stage of today's trip. Then a new pause for a cup of tea in Khettaras (45 km of impressive man-made underground watering canals)between Tinejdad and Erfoud.
Overnight stay in a hotel.

4
Day 4 / Stage 4 - Erfoud - N’kob: 320 km

The air is perfectly clear as we enjoy the dunes of the Erg Chebbi massif and their coral hues that emerge against the black rocks blanketing the plateau. A detour will then take you to the dry seemingly infinite lake of Maïder and its ever present companions, the Simoun or Sirocco winds.
Overnight stay in a hotel.

5
Day 5 / Stage 5 - N’kob - Skoura: 170 km

Today's itinerary takes place along a paved road that overhangs the Draa Valley. A visit to Ouarzazate and its Kasbahs and film studios is imminent. Then the journey continues towards the north-east until it reaches the foothills of the High Atlas mountains.
Overnight stay in a hotel.

6
Day 6 / Stage 6 - Skoura – Bin El Ouidane: 350 km

Assermo guards the imaginary gates into a narrow pass embedded in the red rocks that seems to slash through the High-Atlas range, like a sword. The surface traveled on is quite bad but it's a small price to pay in order to enjoy the surrounding landscape! But after leaving this mineral decor behind, our track takes the visitor to the valley of Toufrine and its century old walnut trees, the meeting point of two very powerful oueds. Vegetation here is abundant and nature's colors deep and rich!
Overnight stay in a hotel.

7
Day 7 / Stage 7 - Bin El Ouidane - Fès: 460 km

In these heights the air is pure and sharp! Families of macaque monkeys live in the profound forests that cover huge expanses of lands interspersed here and there with mountain streams and volcanic lakes. North of the surprising little village of Ifrane, your track will take you through the Valley of Rocks. Then as you drive through the Kandar massif and its forest of green oak trees, you will begin to feel the temperatures rise as you enter the region of Fes and its olive and fig tree plantations.
Overnight stay in a hotel.

8
Day 8 / Stage 8 - Fès - Chefchaouen: 250 km

The light is almost surreal as the track gently winds along wheat fields. The Al Wahda dam collects the turquoise waters of the Béni Zeroual river. The track then starts to climb overlooking the most spectacular views and continues plowing through the red earth, skirting the peaks. And then, after a last curve, as if by magic, the “blue” village of Chefchaouen makes its appearance, with its tiny almost hidden streets and lively atmosphere.
Overnight stay in a hotel.

9
Day 9 / Stage 9 - Chefchaouen – Tangier: 120 km

This is the last stage of this breathtaking trip but the stunning views and surprising surroundings continue to delight the traveler up to the very end. It is a short stage in order allowing one to take one's time and just enjoy the present moment!
In Asilah, you will enjoy a meal of freshly caught fish! The last resting point before heading for Tangier and back to your home country!

Accommodation
  • We've sourced some wonderfully charming accommodation, in the very nook and crannies of the Atlas Mountain Range or in a Kasbah in the desert and even in the heart of a palm tree grove, for when it's time to rest and relax. As is often the case in the world’s remotest places, you can be sure of a very warm welcome!
In the ancient medina in Goulmima, amidst a collection of quaint little gardens, we have discovered an unexpected B&B.  In this little corner of paradise, Saïd offers his guests a delectable lunch. The setting is remarkable! After a coffee and if there is enough time, he will undoubtedly invite you to follow him through a maze of streets to discover the Ksar, a fortified village made of adobe and cut stone.

Level of difficulty
  • This trip is perfectly suited to all bikers and all types of motorcycles thanks to an itinerary made up of picturesque roads. However, at times the surface is a little tricky which means a maxitrail motorbike would be the better option. This is especially true if you a planning to ride two up, in which case a comfortable seat will be needed. Given the total amount of kilometers you will have to drive, endurance and a good physical condition are highly recommended. Finally, and particularly when driving in Morocco, focus is required at all times!

  • You will be accompanied by a Trail Rando team member, riding his own bike. A four-wheeled chase vehicle will also follow the group with the luggage, a basic first aid kit, tools, some spare parts and is always able to lend a hand if required.
