The Sacred Valley of the Incas, the “Puerta del Sol”, and of course Machu-Picchu are just some of the wonders you will be visiting… The “Cañadon de Colca” offers a privileged vantage point to enjoy the majestic flight of the Andean condor and the Aymara and Uro people who have been living on floating islands for over 2000 years, on Lake Titicaca, welcome the travelers with their bright smiles and friendly attitudes.
You will also get a chance to stroll around the streets and mingle with the local population in tiny villages scattered across the rich and colorful country side. The surrounding landscape is simply enchanting and you will certainly feel the presence of the Pachamama, revered by the indigenous people of the Andes: a fertiliy goddness who presides over planting and harvesting and embodies the mountains.

Day1 – Arrival in Cusco (alt. 3 400 m)

Day 2 / Cusco (alt. 3 400 m)

It is time to visit Cusco, the historical capital of the Inca Empire, and its ancient walls and tiny streets. This day is particularly important in order to get used to the altitude and its effect on our unaccustomed bodies!

Day 3 / Stage 1 - Cusco – Yucay (alt. 2 860 m): 110 km

After picking up our bikes, our first stop will be to the thousand-year-old market of Pisac. Then we will continue towards the Sacred Valley of the Incas, along the shores of River Urubamba. We will visit the legendary Inca site of Moray, featuring a series of concentric circles which we now know where an agronomic laboratory.

Day 4 / Visite to Machu-Picchu (alt. 2 430 m)

After an early morning start, our taxi will take us to the train station in Ollataytambo.The tiny train rattles its way to the village of Machu-Picchu,where a shuttle bus takes the visitors to the entrance of the Peruvian Historic Sanctuary and UNESCO World Heritage Site. No words can describe that feeling of awe the overcomes the visitor when setting eyes on the ruins for the first time!

Day 5 / Stage 2 - Yucay – Sicuani (alt. 3 550 m): 180 km

We will be heading south on the national road that joins Bolivia and Peru. The lively and rather hectic traffic along this stretch of road is quite surprising. This stage is short allowing us to stop at any given time to simply enjoy the scenery or stroll around the streets of a small village, mingling with the local inhabitants. In the village of Andahuaylillas, the baroque church is nicknamed the “Sistine Chapel” because of the frescos that adorn its walls.

Day 6 / Stage 3 - Sicuani – Chivay (alt. 3 635 m): 280 km

At this point, things are starting to get serious! As we drive through a series of tiny mountain villages, we will enjoy the drive up towards the very heart of the Andes Mountain Range. The road gradually climbs up to reach a height of 4 500 m before plunging towards the famous Colca River and the village of Chivay from which we will explore the area.

Day 7 / Stage 4 - A/R à la Punta del Condor: 110 km

We will hit the road at 8 AM sharp! The drive up to the highest point of the Colca Canyon will involve both gravel and asphalt. The Colca Canyon is not one of the deepest in the world but is unique in its amazing landscape scattered with innumerable stepped terraces and irrigation canals, in which the Incas farmed potatoes, maize, and other native crops. Around 9 AM the condors take flight delighting the visitors with their ancestral hunting habits!

Day 8 / Stage 5 - Chivay - Arequipa (alt. 2 335 m): 180 km

This is one of the most beautiful and exhilarating stretches of the itinerary and involves crossing a mountain pass at 4 900 m. You will enjoy the view onto a series of volcanoes, some of which peak at 6 000 m. You will also undoubtedly fall under the spell of the Andean Plateaus' majestic beauty!

Day 9 / Visit to Arequipa

Travel back in time with today's visit to Arequipa! Surrounded by volcanoes and considered Peru's second Capital city, Arequipa's historical center extends over an area of 332 hectares and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its colonial architecture, its gastronomy and pleasant character make it the perfect city in which to roam around the streets and soak in the unique atmosphere. If he is available, we will ask Julio to come and pick us up in his "disco taxi". A musical and rhythmic ride to remember!

Day 10 / Stage 6 - Arequipa - Puno (alt. 3 830 m): 310 km

Yet another beautiful stretch covering beautiful landscape after beautiful landscape, in the shadows cast by the legendary Misti Volcano. Our destination today is Puno, located on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. Its sheer size will overwhelm even the most traveled visitor! By volume of water and by surface area, it is the largest lake in South America.

Day 11 / Visit to the self-fashioned floating islands of the Uros

According to legend, the first Uros date back 3 000 years! The Uros used to trade with the Aymara tribe on the mainland, intermarrying with them and eventually abandoning their language for that of the Aymara. Today, their descendants live on an approximate and still growing 120 self-fashioned floating islands on Lake Titicaca.

Day 12 / Stage 7 - Puno - Cusco: 430 km

Throughout our trip back to Cusco, we will once again witness the busy life of native Peruvians all along the country's main roads. This is especially true in Juliaca where the atmosphere created by the street food stalls and the hectic traffic are well worth a pause to just watch and observe this authentic lifestyle.

From a biking standpoint, it is within everyone’s reach. Having said that, the itinerary does include two half days of unpaved roads where some experience driving a maxitrail is recommended.
    TWO UP? It is perfectly feasible! The whole itinerary was conceived bearing this possibility in mind.
Guide and luggage
  • A TrailRando guide will supervise the team on board their own vehicle.
    At the same time, logistical support on four wheels will transport your luggage between stages every day. They will travel by road with regular meeting points along the route.
    They can also pick up a rider and vehicle in the event of breakdown or exhaustion. The team also have a basic first aid kit, tools, some spare parts and are able to lend a hand if required.
