Weaving around the mountainous landscape as the sun starts to come up, a trail zooms resolutely towards a series of summits already bathed in an early morning haze. Further on, a series of tiny winding roads and secret paths leads right into the intricate heart of the sierras...
Give yourself a trip to remember and revel in a true slice of life. Wax lyrical. Seize the day…
And come back with a whole lot more than just the journey itself…
This is Spain like you've never seen it before!
A short warm-up day: small roads interspersed with legendary stretches of trails clinging to the verdant mountains. Just after lunch, the route becomes a tightrope, teetering along the top of the precipitous ridge line dotted with wind turbines.
With its horses, sheep, cows and goats, this place is amazing. Ferns, heather, gentians and foxgloves adorn the embankments. A thousand flower scents fill the air on the colourful meadow.
In this multi-coloured alpine pasture, cows with silky, honey-coloured coats and fine blond curls watch curiously as our helmeted convoy goes past, before continuing their daily munching on the grass...
Now gaining momentum, the landscape intensifies much to everyone's delight. But it's worth keeping something in reserve at the start of the day as we're approaching a renowned stage, one of the longest on the trip.
The grand finale in Pas Valley, Spain's own green Grand Canyon!
The trail weaves over the never-ending plateaux, here where the sky seems ever so slightly larger than before... Keep your eyes wide open, filming's in wide-screen and you're the lead actor!
We go up in altitude again at the end of the day. As we go over one last stretch, the landscape changes dramatically into deep, narrow gorges where our lodgings nestle.
As we zoom across truly amazing landscapes, things calm down a bit when we get to the mountainous region. Don't worry, the respite is short-lived! In the afternoon, the route is unleashed once more into the bare mountains. The trail flits in all directions before winding up in a small hidden village.
At the beginning of the stage, our travels meander between the vineyards and cherry orchards. The path then disappears back into the mountain before dropping down to Margarita's.
With its Far West landscape, the route soon takes us through quintessential hamlets overpowered by the heat. Streets lined with broken paving lead to mostly deserted dwellings. With the midday sun beating down on us, a mouth-watering aroma draws us to a tucked-away restaurant... Crossing into Portugal, the route quickly moves on to the spectacular Douro valley. Afternoon sets in and beautiful trails sweep resolutely to the South. A few, sometimes sandy stretches wind their way through enormous chunks of rock to lead us into Almeida.
Among the groves of green oaks, a smooth trail stretches out over the arid plateaux, taking us back to Spain with the first early morning port of call the fortified village of Cuidad Rodrigo. And no sooner have we arrived than we depart for new climbs and discoveries in the Sierra de Gredos.
The fiesta continues as soon as we hit the road after leaving El Hotelito!... The team bounds along the banks of a sprawling lake before wending its way beneath the great pines. One last stone bridge spans the mountain stream. A concrete path zigzags along the rocky banks. And then suddenly we arrive in the black stone village...
Those last wonderful 300 kilometers make you feel as though you've crossed several countries...
A road packed with non-stop roving spirit in a vast landscape. After the aptly named Vulture Canyon, perched atop
the El Buste crag and its deep red rocks, a daring slipway breaks free from the brink of an expanse of desert. What a sight!
The route begins with a beautiful and amazing foray into the Bardenas Reales. Next, we head straight to the Pyrenees. After Larau, tiny precipitous trails along the crests cling on to the Basque Country. That feeling envelops all of your senses.
The last stretch leads on down among the banana trees and ferns towards Ainhoa as we head back to where we started.
